「排球（ハイキュー）」とは「バレーボール」の日本語訳であり、現在では日本でもあまり使われないので、このアニメを指すことが多い。このアニメは高校生のバレーボールというスポーツで日本1位を目指す話であるが、その前に日本の高校が全て平等ではなく、２種類に分かれることを説明しておかなくては、このアニメを100％楽しむことができないので説明しておきます。

日本の高校には大きく分けて「私立」と「公立」に分けられる。「私立」は企業や個人によって設立された高校であり、受験に合格して入学する以外に「推薦」というスカウト制度によって優秀な人材を受験免除（学費免除もある）によって入学させて集めることができます。一方「公立」は国家によって設立された高校であり「推薦」というスカウト制度はなく、全て公平に受験して合格した生徒だけが入学できます。「公立」は国民が公平に学業をできる環境を主体に設立されているため、「私立」に比べて学費は半分くらいですが、それ以外（スポーツなど）は力を入れていないので優秀な選手は集まりません。更に設備や指導者にも違いがあり、「私立」はトレーニング機器や宿泊施設や優れた指導者や食堂施設を強化していますが、「公立」はそれらが不十分なのです。ですのでそのほとんどが卒業生などのボランティアで整えるため、スポーツでは「私立」に勝てないのが常識です。そしてこのアニメの主人公が入学する「烏野高校」は「公立」なのです。

主人公「日向翔陽（ひなたしょうよう）」は中学生の時に偶然テレビで観た高校バレー全国大会の宮城県立「烏野（からすの）高校」の低身長のエース「小さな巨人」を観て、身長の低い自分でも高身長が優遇されるバレーボールで戦えるのでは？と憧れる。中学校にバレーボール部が無いので友達を集めて大会に出るが、初戦で「コートの王様」と呼ばれる「影山飛雄（かげやまとびお）」がいる県内の中学強豪校「北川第一中学」と対戦することになり大敗する。公立高校の烏野高校に入学した「日向」はバレーボール部に駆け込んだが、そこにはなんと「コートの王様、影山」が居た。「影山」は中学の試合でバレーボール素人の「日向」に点を取られたことを覚えており嫌悪していた。対立する二人にバレーボール部キャプテンで3年生の「沢村大地（さわむらだいち）」は入部を却下する。入部したければ二人で協力して他の新入部員に練習試合で勝つことを条件にする。対立しながらも二人きりで練習する「日向」と「影山」であったが、そこへ同じ新入部員でチームで一番高身長の「月島蛍（つきしまけい）」が二人を挑発する。「月島」は中学生時代の「影山」を知っており、天才セッターと呼ばれながらチームメイトと連携しようとしない「影山」を嫌悪していた。「日向」と「影山」は練習の末に超高速スパイクとなる「変人速攻」を編み出す。更に休部していた天才リベロ「西谷夕（にしのやゆう）」とエーススパイカーで小心者の「東峰旭（あずまねあさひ）」が復帰する。ここから「烏野高校バーレー部」の伝説が始まる。

ここから強豪高校を紹介する。■まずは「烏野高校」と同じ公立で長年のライバルであった東京都立「音駒（ねこま）高校」である。前監督同士が知り合いであったことから毎年練習試合を行っていた。「烏野高校」は日本語で鳥の鴉（カラス）と呼ばれ、「音駒高校」は日本語で動物の猫（ネコ）と呼ばれており、両高校が公立でスカウトで集められた選手ではないため、選手のゴミ捨て場でゴミを漁る鴉と猫の戦い「ゴミ捨て場の決戦」と呼ばれた。しかし全国大会では一度も対戦したことはなく、いつか全国大会で「ゴミ捨て場の決戦」を行うことを両高校目標にしている。「音駒高校」は飛びぬけた選手は居ないが、相手に得点させないディフェンスが優れており、相手のスパイクの勢いを殺すリードブロッカー「黒尾鉄朗（くろおてつお）」と、敵チームの観察能力に優れたセッター「孤爪研磨（こづめけんま）」とで全国大会へ出場する。その前の合宿で「烏野高校」と練習試合したことで「孤爪」と「日向」は友達となっている。更に「黒尾」はリードブロックの極意を高身長の「月島」に教え込む。そして全国大会で「ゴミ捨て場の決戦」を実現させることを約束する。
