舞台は現在の日本。人を襲う怨霊と、その浄化を仕事とする霊力を持った呪術師との闘い。呪術師の派閥争いから呪術師同士が闘うこともある。
The setting is modern Japan. Battles between demons that attack people and exorcists with spiritual powers whose job it is to purify them. Exorcists sometimes fight against each other because of factional conflicts among exorcists.
高校生「虎杖悠仁（いたどりゆうじ）」は夜の学校で怨霊に襲われ、怨霊が探していた最強の怨霊「宿儺（すくな）」の指（他にも数本ある）を食べてしまう。そして体内に宿儺を宿し力を得て怨霊を倒す。しかし、普通なら宿儺に体を奪われるところだが、虎杖は宿儺を体内に封印してしまう。駆け付けた最強の呪術師「五条悟（ごじょうさとる）」は、そんな虎杖の力に興味を示し呪術師学校へ勧誘する。宿儺に呪われた人間はその場で処刑するのが呪術師の掟だが、それに違反した五条も虎杖も他の呪術師や怨霊から命を狙われることとなる。
High school student "Itadori" is attacked by a demon at night at school and eats the finger (and several others) of "Sukuna" the strongest demon the demon was looking for. She then gains the power to possess "Sukuna" inside her body and defeats the demon. However, when "Sukuna" would normally take his body, Torajo seals "Sukuna" inside his body. "Gojo" the strongest exorcist who rushes to the scene, is intrigued by "Sukuna's" power and recruits her to the exorcism school. The exorcist's code is to execute on the spot anyone who has been cursed by "Sukuna" but both "Gojo" and "Itadori" break this code and are targeted by other exorcists and demons.
重力を操る最強の呪術師「五条悟」と、体内に数千体の怨霊を宿す最強の敵「夏油傑（げとうすぐる）」。二人は呪術師学校の同級生で親友であった。二人の呪術師学校時代を描いた「懐玉・玉折（かいぎょく・ぎょくせつ）偏」で二人は絶縁し、その後を描いた「劇場版呪術廻戦０」では戦うこととなる。最新テレビ版「渋谷事変」では五条は夏油に封印されてしまう。
"Gojo" is the strongest exorcist who manipulates gravity, and "Geto" is the strongest enemy with thousands of demons in his body. They were classmates and best friends at the school of exorcism. They were insulated in "Episode Kaigoku・Gyokusetsu" depicting their student days, and fought in "Jyujyutsukaisen 0 the Movie" depicting their later years. In the latest TV version, "Episode Shibuya Incident", "Gojo" is sealed in "Geto".
