「機動戦士ガンダム」シリーズは、私の青春と言っても良いほど子供の頃から観ていた作品だ。近年では「機動戦士ガンダムSEED」シリーズのように全く別の世界観でのストーリーも増えている。しかしこの「閃光のハサウェイ」は元祖ガンダムシリーズの原作の続編であり、主人公がテロリストの首謀者でもあることからアニメ化は困難だと言われていたが、小説の出版から30年の時を超えて劇場版としてアニメ化された。非常に楽しみにしていた作品だ。この度公開されたのは３部作の最初の１部である。

増え過ぎた人類は地球環境を汚染しつくしていた。そこで人類はスペースコロニーを建造して人類を宇宙に移民させる。宇宙世紀（Universal Century：U.C）の始まりである。しかし一部の特権階級者が地球に残り宇宙を統治する「地球連邦政府（地球連邦）」が生まれる。宇宙移民者はその圧制に苦しむ。宇宙世紀0079年、地球から最も遠いスペースコロニーが「ジオン共和国」を名乗り独立を宣言する。しかし平和を願った建国の指導者「ジオン・ズム・ダイクン」は暗殺され、実権を「ザビ家一族」に握られる。ザビ家当主の「デギン・ソド・ザビ」は自ら国王を名乗り「ジオン公国（ジオン）」に改名する。そして「地球連邦」に対して宣戦布告する。「地球連邦」の圧倒的戦力に「ジオン」は瞬時に降伏するかと思われたが、「ジオン」の開発した「ミノフスキー粒子（電磁波を遮断して通信や索敵を阻害する）」と「接近戦人型機動兵器（モビルスーツ）」の量産化によって戦力差は拮抗する。その後「ジオン」は核兵器や毒ガスを使用してスペースコロニーを地球に落下させるという暴挙にでる。その結果、地球の総人口の半分が死滅する。これが「１年戦争」の始まりである。「地球連邦」は「ジオンのモビルスーツ」の戦闘力を認め、秘密裏に新型モビルスーツ「ガンダム」を開発する。しかし「ジオン」のエースパイロットで「赤い彗星」の異名を持つ「シャア・アズナブル（シャア）」に情報が洩れる。この１年戦争は「ジオン」と「地球連邦」の戦いだけでなく、「シャア」と「ガンダム」のパイロットで開発者の息子「アムロ・レイ（アムロ）」との戦いの始まりでもある。この時「ガンダム」を運ぶ新鋭艦「ホワイトベース」の新任艦長だったのが「ハサウェイ」の父「ブライト・ノア」であり、その「ホワイトベース」の操舵手になったのが「ハサウェイ」の母「ミライ」である。また、人間とは思えない反射神経とテレパシーのような意思疎通能力を持っっていた「アムロ」と「シャア」は進化した人間という意味の「ニュータイプ」と呼ばれていた。そして「シャア」は「ジオン」建国の指導者「ジオン・ズム・ダイクン」の息子であり、「ザビ家」への復讐を考えていた。

However, "Zeon Zum Daikun", the leader of the colony who wished for peace, is assassinated, and the "Zabi family" takes over the power of the colony. The head of the "Zabi family", "Degin Sod Zabi", takes the name of king himself and changes the name to the "Principality of Zeon". He then declares war on the "Earth Federation". "Zeon" seemed to instantly surrender to the overwhelming power of the "Earth Federation", but the difference in war potential was overcome by the mass production of the "Minovsky Particle (which blocks electromagnetic waves to inhibit communication and search and rescue)" and "close combat humanoid mobile weapons (mobile suits) " developed by "Zeon". Later, “Zeon” uses nuclear weapons and poison gas to cause space colonies to fall to the earth. As a result, half of the earth's population dies. This is the beginning of the “One-Year War". The "Earth Federation" recognizes the combat power of "Zeon's mobile suits" and secretly develops a new type of mobile suit, the "Gundam". However, information is leaked to Zeon's ace pilot, "Char Aznable (Char)", who is known as the “Red Comet". This "one-year war" is not only the battle between “Zeon” and the “Earth Federation,” but also the beginning of the battle between “Char” and “Amuro Ray (Amuro),” the son of the pilot and developer of the “Gundam". Hathaway's father, "Bright Noa", was the new captain of the "White Base", the newest ship carrying the "Gundam", and Hathaway's mother, "Mirai", was the helmsman of the "White Base" at this time. ■U.C.0087年に勢力を取り戻した「地球連邦」内でジオン残党を武力によって取り締まる「ティターンズ」という勢力が生まれる。しかしスペースコロニーに住む一般市民へも被害が拡大し「ティターンズ」の反抗勢力「エウーゴ」が生まれ、「地球連邦」内の二つの派閥による内紛が勃発する。この戦いを「グリプス戦役」と呼ぶ。この時の主人公は「エウーゴ」が開発した「Zガンダム」のパイロットとなる少年「カミーユ」である。彼は「アムロ」に似た「ニュータイプ」の力を持っていた。そして名を変えて別人に成りすました「シャア」と、軍から退けられていた「アムロ」が「エウーゴ」に参加し、「ティターンズ」を壊滅させる。最後に主人公「カミーユ」は「ニュータイプ」の力を使い過ぎたのか原因不明の精神疾患を患う。この物語の中で一度だけ子供の頃の「ハサウェイ」が登場している。

■U.C.0088年に「ティターンズ」壊滅後「ジオン」の残党で結成された「ネオ・ジオン」が勢力を増し、失踪していたザビ家の生き残り「ミネバ」を当主として「ジオン」再興のために反乱を起こす。しかし「ミネバ」はまだ幼く、実質は摂政の「ハマーン」が実権を握っていた。「ネオ・ジオン」の反乱を食い止めるために一早く「エウーゴ」が開戦する、「第一次ネオ・ジオン抗争」の勃発である。この戦いでは前回の「グリプス戦役」の時に失踪した「シャア」と「アムロ」は登場しない。またエースパイロットの「カミーユ」も精神疾患により参戦しない。変わって、当初は「Zガンダム」を盗んで売り捌こうとしていた「ジュドー」がエースパイロットとなる。そして新型モビルスーツ「ZZガンダム」に搭乗することとなる。そして「ネオ・ジオン」は再び地球へのコロニー落としを敢行し、「地球連邦」に旧ジオン領の譲渡を認めさせる。しかし「ネオ・ジオン」内で「ハマーン」政権への不満が露出し、内乱と「ジュドー」の活躍により崩壊し、「ハマーン」は自害して終焉する。その後「ジュドー」は木星へと旅立つ。

■U.C.0093年、失踪していた「シャア」が「ネオ・ジオン」を率いて反乱を起こす。この時「エウーゴ」は解散しており、「アムロ」と「ブライト」は地球連邦正規軍「ロンド・ベル」部隊として「ネオ・ジオン」の「シャア」と再び戦うこととなる。「第二次ネオ・ジオン抗争」の勃発である。そして「シャア」は小惑星「アクシズ」を地球に落下させようとする。まだ少年の「ハサウェイ」は「ブライト」に会うために宇宙へ向かっていた。その中で不思議な力をもった少女「クエス」と出会う。スペースコロニーで「シャア」と出会った「クエス」は「シャア」への憧れがあり共に行ってしまう。「シャア」は「クエス」の「ニュータイプ」としての力に気付き、戦場に出陣させる。「ハサウェイ」は「クエス」を取り戻すために「ブライト」の目を盗んでモビルスーツに乗り込む。戦場で「クエス」を見つけるが、「クエス」は「ハサウェイ」を庇って味方のミサイルに当たり戦死してしまう。小惑星「アクシズ」は地球へ落下する前に核爆弾により爆発し、二つに避けてしまう。「アムロ」は「シャア」を道連れに地球に落下する「アクシズ」の破片を「ニューガンダム」一機で地球軌道から押し出す。「シャア」の反乱は失敗に終わる。そして「アムロ」と「シャア」は大気圏に焼かれ死んだことになっている。

While there, he meets a girl named "Ques", who has a mysterious power. When she meets “Char” on the space colony, “Ques” has a longing for “Char” and goes with him. “Char” realizes "Ques' power" as a “new type” and sends her to the battlefield. In order to get "Ques" back, “Hathaway” steals "Bright's" attention and climbs into a mobile suit. She finds "Ques" on the battlefield, but "Ques" is killed in battle when she is hit by a friendly missile while defending "Hathaway". The asteroid “Axis” explodes before falling to Earth and is split in two by a nuclear bomb. Amuro, with Char in tow, uses the New Gundam to push the falling Axis debris out of Earth's orbit. Char's rebellion ends in failure. Amuro and Char were to be burned to death in the atmosphere.

■U.C.0096年「ラプラス戦争」勃発。この原作は「閃光のハサウェイ」の後に小説家されたもので、外伝的な物語である。この主人公は「第一次ネオ・ジオン抗争」後に消息不明となっていた「ザビ家」の生き残りの少女「ミネバ」と新型モビルスーツ「ユニコーンガンダム」のパイロットとなる「バナージ」である。この戦争は地球連邦政府を転覆させられるほどの秘密が隠されたとされる「ラプラスの箱」を奪い合う戦争である。「ラプラス」とは西暦から宇宙世紀へ変わるセレモニーが行われた宇宙ステーションの名前である。そしてこのセレモニーには地球連邦政府初代首相と各国の代表が参加していたが、テロ行為により宇宙ステーションごと爆破された。これが「ラプラス事件」であり、その真相が納められた箱だと思われている。

■U.C.0105年、地球連邦政府の要人が地球を私物化し、一般市民が地球に住めなくなる法案を可決しようとしていた。それに反抗して政府の要人を暗殺していたのが「マフティー」と呼ばれるテロ集団である。そのリーダーとなったのが「ハサウェイ」である。「ハサウェイ」は「第二次ネオ・ジオン抗争」で初恋の「クエス」を失い、ニュータイプの「シャア」や「アムロ」の戦いを目のあたりにして、彼らの地球を守ろうとする思いを知った。それだけに地球を私物化しようとする「地球連邦政府の要人」を許せなかった。「ハサウェイ」は地球に降下する地球連邦政府高官と同じシャトルに同乗する。目的は本当に殺さなければならない人物達か見極めたかったのだ。「マフティー」は地球連邦政府の議会を襲撃する予定だった。しかし「ハサウェイ」の知らないところで、父「ブライト」がその防衛司令官に任命された。もちろん「ブライト」も「マフティー」のリーダーが息子の「ハサウェイ」だとは知らない。
